The MBL2 gene encodes a mannose-binding lectin (MBL), or protein (MBP), that is secreted by the liver as part of the acute-phase response and is involved in innate immune defense.
The ligands for MBL are expressed by a wide variety of microorganisms, and binding of the protein leads to opsonization as well as activation of the complement system.
