Gene Ontology (GO)
The goal of the Gene Ontology (GO) Consortium is to produce a controlled vocabulary that can be applied to all organisms even as knowledge of gene and protein roles in cells is accumulating and changing. GO provides three structured networks of defined terms to describe gene product attributes. GO is one of the controlled vocabularies of the Open Biological Ontologies.

How are Gene Ontology (GO) vocabularies structured?
The GO vocabularies have a hierarchical structure that permits a range of detail from high-level, broadly descriptive terms to very low-level, highly specific terms. The range is useful for annotating genes and searching for gene information using these terms as search criteria. You can either browse or search the vocabularies from the Browser entry page.
