basaloid squamous cell carcinoma of oral cavity
26 April 2016Basaloid SCC of oral cavity
Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma (BSCC) is a rare variant of SCC having a marked predilection for the upper aerodigestive tract. It is regarded as a high-grade tumour with increased propensity for metastasis to distant sites.
The histological hallmark of BSCC is its dimorphic pattern of presentation with a characteristic basal cell component associated with squamous component.
The intrinsically aggressive behaviour of BSCC and its association with HPV is (...) -
HPV-associated oral intraepithelial neoplasia
30 September 2014Human papillomavirus-associated oral intraepithelial neoplasia
’HPV-associated Oral Intraepithelial Neoplasia’ is used to characterize the lesions of the oral cavity for consistency in nomenclature with HPV-associated lesions of the lower anogenital tract.

oral squamous cell carcinoma
23 September 2014oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma; OSCC; oral SCC
Definition: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) represents 95% of all forms of head and neck cancer, and over the last decade its incidence has increased by 50%.
Oral carcinogenesis is a multistage process, which simultaneously involves precancerous lesions, invasion and metastasis. Degradation of the cell cycle and the proliferation of malignant cells results in the loss of control mechanisms that ensure the normal function of tissues. (...) -
T1 oral squamous cell carcinoma
23 September 2014Prognosis
Perineural invasion (PNI) has been recognized as a poor prognostic factor for Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma. PNI independently predicts a poor prognosis in T1 Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma patients who are potentially curable but tend to be treated conservatively. For its efficacy in improving treatment outcomes, aggressive elective neck dissection (END) is indicated for T1 Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC) patients at the presence of PNI.

clear cell odontogenic carcinoma
15 July 2013Clear cell odontogenic carcinomas (CCOCs) are a rare tumor of the jaws, which have considerable morphologic and immunophenotypic overlap with (hyalinizing) clear cell carcinomas (CCCs) of salivary origin.
Some studies demonstrate the EWSR1-ATF1 translocation in a CCOC and demonstrate a concrete link between CCCs and at least a subset of CCOCs.

HPV-associated oral intraepithelial neoplasia
10 May 2013HPV-associated OIN; Human papillomavirus-associated oral intraepithelial neoplasia.
The term ’HPV-associated Oral Intraepithelial Neoplasia’ characterize lesions of the oral cavity for consistency in nomenclature with HPV-associated lesions of the lower anogenital tract.
Epithelial hyperplasia with marked karyorrhexis and apoptosis are present in all the cases, along with features of conventional oral epithelial dysplasia.

MEN2B-associated multiple mucosal neuroma
17 February 2012mucosal neuroma syndrome; myelinic neuroma
Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2B (MEN 2B) is a rare disease caused by germline mutations in the RET proto-oncogene and is transmitted in an autosomal dominant fashion.
Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2B (MEN 2B) is characterized by medullary thyroid carcinoma, pheochromocytoma and mucosal neuroma developing in the tongue, lip, intestinal tract, palate etc.
Among these neoplasias, mucosal neuroma generally develops from early childhood. (...)
