gastritis cystic profunda
13 September 2011Gastritis cystica profunda (GCP) is analogous to the more commonly encountered "colitis cystic profunda".
Both conditions are associated with polypoid and/or ulcerative mucosal lesions with or without previous surgery. Typically, the misplaced glands in GCP are encountered in the submucosa.
Gastritis cystic profunda affects elderly men and is often encountered in a previously operated on stomach.
Cysts develop in the submucosa or muscularis mucosae of the gastric body and antrum. They (...) -
squamo-oxyntic gap
24 November 2010The present definition of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is based on clinical criteria that are difficult to reproduce accurately. This study provides a method to develop a histologic definition of GERD based on biopsies obtained from the affected esophagus.
The squamo-oxyntic gap is equivalent to the columnar-lined esophagus. Its presence is a specific and sensitive indicator of reflux and can be used as a cellular criterion to define GERD. The length of the squamo-oxyntic gap (...) -

gastric lesions in ulcerative colitis
24 November 2010Upper gastrointestinal involvement, both gastric and duodenal, is known to occur in both Crohn disease and ulcerative colitis (UC).
Most UC patients have no upper gastrointestinal inflammation in biopsies, and most of the inflammations they have are not unique.
The most common upper gastrointestinal inflammatory pattern in patients with UC is focal gastritis, followed by gastric basal mixed inflammation and superficial plasmacytosis.
The one unique upper gastrointestinal inflammation in (...) -

Definition: Histologically, the polygonal tumor cells are arranged in trabecular fashion or solid nests separated by narrow fibrous stroma composed of sinusoid-like capillaries.
Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells are positive for α-fetoprotein.
Under transmission electron microscope, numerous circular granules of dense electron were found in the cytoplasm. (...) -
CDH1-associated gastric adenocarcinoma
8 September 2010Hereditary diffuse gastric cancer (HDGC) is an autosomal dominant cancer susceptibility syndrome, largely attributable to germline mutations and deletions in the gene CDH1 encoding E-cadherin.
Asymptomatic, mutation-positive individuals often choose prophylactic gastrectomy for cancer risk reduction.
Examination of the entire mucosa of prophylactic gastrectomy specimens is essential and shows occult gastric cancers in most cases.
Doing PAS staining instead of H&E on CDH1 (...)
