An adverse drug reaction is defined as a toxic or undesired response to a drug used at therapeutic doses to prevent, diagnose, or treat disease.
It is estimated that approximately 2 million hospitalized patients suffered from serious adverse drug reactions in 1994, resulting in 106,000 deaths. These estimates are conservative because they do not include errors in drug dosage or administration or patient noncompliance.
Predictable reactions are based on the (...)

taxanes
5 January 2006Definition : Taxanes are a class of diterpenes.
Taxanes were originally identified from plants of the genus Taxus (yews), and feature a taxadiene core.
Molecules as paclitaxel (Taxol) and docetaxel (Taxotere) are widely used as chemotherapy agents. cabazitaxel was FDA approved to treat hormone-refractory prostate cancer.
Taxanes are important drugs in the treatment of ovarian and other cancers, but their efficacy is limited by intrinsic and acquired drug resistance.

platinum
12 June 2005The accidental discovery of the anticancer properties of cisplatin and its clinical introduction in the 1970s represent a major landmark in the history of successful anticancer drugs.
Although carboplatin—a second-generation analogue that is safer but shows a similar spectrum of activity to cisplatin—was introduced in the 1980s, the pace of further improvements slowed for many years.
However, in the past several years interest in platinum drugs has increased.
Key developments include the (...)
