thymic precursor T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma
10 April 2015Precursor T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphoblastic lymphoma (T-cell ALL/LBL) also is a tumor frequently occurring in the anterior mediastinum.
When a large biopsy or resection specimen is available for review, the morphologic differentiation between thymoma and T-cell ALL/LBL, in general, is straightforward.
Owing to its anatomic location, however, the initial study of a mediastinal mass often commences with fine-needle aspiration (FNA) or mediastinoscopic biopsy, severely (...) -

10 April 2015Thymocytes are immature T lymphocytes with varying degrees of maturation. They commonly are encountered in the study of anterior mediastinal masses and often are a significant component of hyperplastic thymus or lymphocyte-rich thymoma (type B1).

thymoma type B3
29 May 2013Definition
Type B3 thymoma is a thymic epithelial tumor composed predominantly of sheets of moderately atypical polygonal epithelial cells intermingled with a few non-neoplastic immature T-cells.
Type B3 thymoma accounts for between 10-25% of all thymomas and are frequently associated with myasthenia gravis.
At low power, type B3 thymomas have a lobular architecture with coarse or delicate fibrous bands dividing the tumor into irregular lobules as seen here.
Due to predominance of (...) -

thymoma type B2
7 December 2012Definition: Type B2 thymoma is composed of clusters of neoplastic epithelial cells in a background of abundant immature T-cells. The epithelial cell density is higher than that seen in type B1 thymoma or the normal thymus. Foci of medullary differentiation may or may not be seen. It makes up 25% to 30% of all thymomas.
This image shows thick fibrous septa dividing the tumor into lobules.
Type B2 thymoma is usually seen in adults in their 5th or 6th decade of life. Almost 55% of patients (...) -

Definition: Type A thymoma (also known as Spindle Cell Thymoma) is composed of bland spindle or oval epithelial cells admixed with few or no lymphocytes. *

Type A thymomas generally have a thick fibrous capsule as shown here. Prominent fibrous bands course through the tumor separating it into lobules.
