microcystic adenoma of the pancreas
Serous cystic neoplasms of the pancreas are generally considered benign lesions.
Malignant counterparts have been occasionally described, and the diagnosis of malignancy is based solely on the presence of synchronous or metachronous metastases to the lymph nodes or liver, direct tumor invasion into adjacent organs, or vascular invasion.
However, these malignant serous cystic tumors are lined by benign-appearing glycogen-rich cuboidal cells, which have (...)

pancreatic neuroendocrine carcinoma
25 March 2012neuroendocrine carcinomas of the pancreas
Poorly differentiated neuroendocrine carcinomas (NECs) of the pancreas are rare malignant neoplasms with a poor prognosis.
Small cell NECs are genetically similar to large cell NECs, and these genetic changes are distinct from those reported in PanNETs. (#22251937#)
The finding of Bcl-2 overexpression in poorly differentiated NECs, particularly small cell NEC, suggests that Bcl-2 antagonists/inhibitors may be a viable treatment option for these (...) -
cystic papillary pattern in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma
8 March 2012The prototypic pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma shows small-caliber glands that are placed within an exuberant desmoplastic stromal reaction.
A number of histologic patterns have been described, and the majority of these patterns are genetically and biologically related to conventional ductal adenocarcinomas.
The cystic papillary pattern of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma that mimics "intraductal papillary mucinous carcinoma", both morphologically and radiologically. (#22367300#)

peripancreatic paraganglioma
30 January 2012Paragangliomas are rare neuroendocrine neoplasms arising in extra-adrenal chromaffin cells of the autonomic nervous system. In rare instances, paragangliomas present around and involve the pancreas, thereby mimicking one of the more common primary pancreatic lesions.
Synopsis
diffuse epigastric and abdominal pain
incidental mass
predominantly located in the body of the pancreas
size from 5.5 to 17.0 cm (mean, 10.0 cm)
56% of cystic change

somatostatinoma
10 June 2011Definition: Somatostatinoma is a very rare endocrine tumors. Less than 200 have been reported in the literature, 80 of which linked to NF1.
At the time of the diagnosis, 75 to 80 percent of the patients are metastatics, either in the liver or with nodes metastases.
Surgery is the only treatment.

malignant insulinoma
1 December 2010It is difficult to predict the malignant nature of an insulinoma on the basis of its histological features.
The current WHO classification criteria for malignant insulinoma involve the presence of metastases, gross invasion, tumor size, percentage of mitoses, proliferative index and vascular invasion.
However, metastases are generally considered the only definitive characteristic of malignancy. Out of all insulinomas, 5%-10% are malignant.
The differential diagnosis between malignant and (...) -
pancreatic acinar cell carcinoma with prominent ductal differentiation
1 December 2010Pancreatic acinar cell carcinomas (ACCs) are clinically and pathologically distinct from pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas (PDAs). Whereas endocrine differentiation has been well shown in ACCs, significant ductal components are rare.
Despite the early embryologic divergence of acinar and ductal cell lineages, rare pancreatic tumors have both acinar and ductal differentiation, usually predominantly the former. The clinical course is highly aggressive. (#20182344#)
