Definition : Infection by Malassezia furfur, often of upper trunk.

Synopsis

- Variably pigmented macules of all sizes,
- orthokeratotic hyperkeratosis
- yeast spores and pseudohyphae within stratum corneum
- Short hyphae and spores (spaghetti and meatballs) with GMS or PAS stains

Differential diagnosis

- presence of fungi does not rule out coexisting inflammatory and neoplastic disorders
