Monday 23 April 2018

Examples

- salivary mucoepidermoid carcinoma (of the salivary glands)

- squamous cell carcinoma of salivary glands

  • The squamous cell carcinoma of submandibular salivary gland is a malignant epithelial tumor of major salivary glands composed of epidermoid cells / squamous cells.
  • squamous cell carcinoma of salivary glands accounts for about 0.9-4.7% of all salivary gland tumors with a predilection to occur in parotid gland due to perinodal involvement.
  • Primary squamous cell carcinoma of submandibular salivary gland accounts to about 2% of the tumors.

- squamous cell carcinoma metastazing to salivary glands

- pleomorphic adenoma with extensive squamous metaplasia +/- keratin cyst formations

  • squamous metaplasia, sometimes with the formation of keratin pearls, can be present.
  • possible formation of extensive keratin-filled cysts lined by squamous epithelium.
  • Extensive squamous metaplasia can be mistaken for malignancy, including mucoepidermoid carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.
