Monday 23 April 2018
Examples
salivary mucoepidermoid carcinoma (of the salivary glands)
squamous cell carcinoma of salivary glands
- The squamous cell carcinoma of submandibular salivary gland is a malignant epithelial tumor of major salivary glands composed of epidermoid cells / squamous cells.
- squamous cell carcinoma of salivary glands accounts for about 0.9-4.7% of all salivary gland tumors with a predilection to occur in parotid gland due to perinodal involvement.
- Primary squamous cell carcinoma of submandibular salivary gland accounts to about 2% of the tumors.
squamous cell carcinoma metastazing to salivary glands
pleomorphic adenoma with extensive squamous metaplasia +/- keratin cyst formations
- squamous metaplasia, sometimes with the formation of keratin pearls, can be present.
- possible formation of extensive keratin-filled cysts lined by squamous epithelium.
- Extensive squamous metaplasia can be mistaken for malignancy, including mucoepidermoid carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.
