Tumor types
papillary thyroid carcinoma
- Nuclear grooving is a useful morphologic feature in the diagnosis of papillary carcinoma of the thyroid (PTC) in tissue sections and imprint smears.
- Nuclear grooving, when seen in abundance, can be considered a reliable criterion for the diagnosis of papillary carcinoma in fine needle aspiration cytology of the thyroid.
- The presence of occasional grooves, however, should be regarded as a nonspecific finding.
Langerahns histiocytosis
granulosa cell tumor
- Granulosa cell tumor has sheets of small cells with longitudinal nuclear grooves (“coffee bean nuclei”), and Call-Exner bodies (eosinophilic fluid filled spaces surrounded by granulosa cells). Most tumors cause hyperestrogenism.
