primary CIPO
Friday 8 May 2009
Definition: Primitive chronic intestinal pseudoobstruction (primitive CIPO) is classified into enteric visceral myopathies, neuropathies, and/or mesenchymopathies. Although the histology usually permits to highlight pathologic abnormalities of CIPO, it fails in almost a third of cases.
Types
myopathic CIPO (enteric visceral myopathies)
neuropathic CIPO or neurogenic CIPO (enteric visceral neuropathies)
mesenchymopathic CIPO (enteric visceral mesenchymopathies)
absence of the interstitial cells of Cajal (19040916)
Immunochemistry
Immunohistochemistry using Hu C/D and CD117 antibodies combined to the standard histology increased the yield of detection of neuromuscular abnormalities in idiopathic CIPO patients. (19252433)
Animal models
Deletion of PTEN in the mouse enteric nervous system induces ganglioneuromatosis and mimics intestinal pseudoobstruction. (19884655)
