extracellular ghost tangles

Definition: Tau filaments (TAU) accumulate in dystrophic neurites as fine neuropil threads or as bundles of PHFs in neuronal bodies, forming neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) which become "extracellular ghost tangles" after the death of the neurons (neuronal death).
