Meconium plug syndrome is defined as transient large bowel obstruction relieved by the passage of meconium plugs.

It is considered by some to be the same disease as meconial ileus only with a different location and severity.

Perforation of the colon is a rare event in neonates and is not a usual feature of cystic fibrosis.
