Nucleoside analogues can cause a mitochondrial myopathy with RRFs in muscle are nucleoside analogues, such as zidovudine, used in the treatment of certain human immunodeficiencies.

Nucleoside analogues, after conversion into their active form, inhibit mitochondrial DNA polymerase-gamma and induce mtDNA depletion.
