Definition: Hybridization is the joining two complementary strands of DNA or one each of DNA and RNA to form a double-stranded molecule. One strand is often labeled and used as a probe to detect the presence of the second strand.

In molecular genetics, an hybrid is a DNA molecule with strands of different origin.
