microfibrils

Microfibrils of diameter 10-12 nm are found either in association with elastin (MIM.130160) or independently and are an important component of the extracellular matrix of many tissues. The proteins composing the microfibrils are distinct from elastin.

-  Fibrillins (FBNs) are the major constitutive element of extracellular microfibrils and has widespread distribution in both elastic and nonelastic connective tissue throughout the body.

-  Another component of microfibrils is microfibril-associated glycoproteins (MFAPs)

-  Other proteins localized to the elastic fiber microfibrils include the enzyme lysyl oxidase (LOX) (MIM.153455).
