Acute inflammation is the presence of extravascular polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs) in the absence of concurrent chronic inflammation.

Acute gastritis is an cute inflammation in the gastric mucosa is most readily demonstrated as epithelial PMN infiltration, which is never a normal finding.
