Synopsis
firm lungs, atelectatic lungs (pulmonary atelectasia)
uneven expansion pattern
focal alveolar hemorrhage
focal alveolar edema (alveolar fluid in alveoli)
hyaline membranes along terminal bronchioles, respiratory bronchioles and alveolar ducts
- yellow hyalin membranes if uncongugated hyperbilirubinemia and icterus
Etiology
pulmonary surfactant deficiency
- prematurity
- surfactant protein mutations
Complications
pneumothorax
bronchopulmonary dysplasia
- acute bronchopulmonary dysplasia
- chronic bronchopulmonary dysplasia
