neonatal enteropathies

intractable diarrhoea, protracted diarrhea of infancy, intractable diarrhea

 

Syndrome consisting of unremitting chronic diarrhea occuring in infants less than 3 months of age, resulting in malnutrition with careful exclusion of an infectious etiology. (Avery, 1968)

Intractable diarrhea of infancy is an heterogeneous syndrome with a nymber of possible causes, resulting in severe chronic diarrhea and associated with severe malnutrition not easily resolved by conventional management. (Wlaker-Smith, 1994)

Etiology

-  microvillous inclusion disease (microvillous atrophy)
-  intestinal epithelial dysplasia (tufting enteropathy)
-  autoimmune enteropathy
-  IPEX syndrome
