Definition: Dilatation of the renal pelvis and calices due to a urinary obstruction.

Fetal hydronephrosis is the most common cause of an abdominal mass of genitourinary tract origin in neonates.

Types

-  unilateral fetal hydronephrosis
-  bilateral fetal hydronephrosis

Synopsis

-  pelvicalyceal dilatation
-  renal parenchymal atrophy
-  renal parenchymal fibrosis
-  blunting of medullary pyramids
-  foci of residual renal parenchyma

Etiology

-  unilateral congenital hydronephrosis

-  bilateral congenital hydronephrosis (20%)

Associations

-  Renal dysplasia


Hydronephrosis - Dilatation of pyelocaliceal cavities. Renal atrophy. Ureteral malformation with megauretere.
