selenium deficiency
Monday 23 March 2009
Selenium, like vitamin E, protects against oxidative damage of membrane lipids. The deficiency of this element is well known in China as Keshan disease, which presents as a congestive cardiomyopathy, mainly in children and young women. It results from a markedly low level of the metal in soil, water, and food.
