Glucagon is a 29-amino acid pancreatic hormone that counteracts the glucose-lowering action of insulin by stimulating glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis.

Glucagon is a member of a multigene family that includes secretin (MIM.182099), vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) (MIM.192320), gastric inhibitory peptide (GIP) (MIM.137240), glicentin, and others.

Human, rabbit, rat, pig, and cow glucagons are identical.
