asphyxiated neonates
spinal cord infarction
- associated with prematurity
- associated with episodes of systemic hypotension
- lumbosacral cord segments more severely affected
- affected levels central cord parenchyma completely necrotic with relative sparing of the periphery
diffuse neuronal necrosis
- ventromedial neurons most profoundly injured
- hematomyelia dissecting into spinal cord parenchyma
- germinal matrix hemorrhage
- "Watershed zones" in the cord
