Etiology

- nodular thyroid disease

- central hyperthyroidism
- gestational trophoblastic disease
- iodine-induced hyperthyroidism
- painless thyroiditis
- struma ovarii
- rapidly growing tumors in the thyroid
- exogenous thyroid hormone intake
- ectopic production of TSH and TRH
- resistance to thyroid hormone
