Definition: An autosome is a chromosome not involved in sex determination (or a chromosome other than a sex chromosome).

The diploid human genome consists of 46 chromosomes, 22 pairs of autosomes, and one pair of gonosomes (sex chromosomes): the X and Y chromosomes.
